Shoreham Academy marks opening with Foundation Day
21 September 2009
Shoreham Academy, which opened earlier this month, held a special Foundation Day for its students and staff.
Four ceremonies were held so that every academy student from Year 7 to Year 13 could take part in the special day.
The ceremonies began with a welcome from Johnson Kane, the Chair of the academy’s Local Governing Body followed by speeches by Dame Angela Rumbold, Chair of the United Learning Trust (ULT), which sponsors the academy and Heidi Brown, Principal of Shoreham Academy. During the ceremonies, students and staff were presented with Foundation Certificates which marked their unique position as the founding students and staff of Shoreham Academy.
Guests at the Foundation Ceremonies included the Rt Revd & Rt Hon The Lord Carey of Clifton, Chair of the United Church Schools Trust (ULT’s parent body), Mark Dunn, Chairman of West Sussex County Council, Ian Elliott, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for West Sussex, Simon Knight (Esq.), High Sheriff for West Sussex and Dr Robin Baker, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Chichester which is working in partnership with the academy.
Commenting on the Foundation Day, Ms Heidi Brown, Principal of Shoreham Academy, said: “Today marks the start of the next phase of our school’s journey and we are delighted to have officially joined the ULT family of academies. Students and staff have embraced our transition to academy status and are looking forward to taking full advantage of all the opportunities it offers. We have a very exciting future ahead as we will build on the successes of our predecessor school and create an academy which will offer the very highest standards of education to children in Shoreham and Southwick.”
