12 November 2009
The United Learning Trust (ULT), sponsor of Walthamstow Academy, has appointed Ms Emma Skae as Walthamstow Academy’s permanent Principal. Ms Skae joined the academy as Deputy Principal in January of this year from Hackney Free and Parochial School; she was appointed Acting Principal in March.
Sir Ewan Harper, Chief Executive of ULT, said: “Under Ms Skae’s leadership, the academy has had a successful eight months; improvement has continued with the academy achieving its best ever GCSE as well as its first ever A level results. She has proved herself to be a skilled and dynamic leader and I know that her appointment will be popular amongst both students and staff.”
Commenting on her appointment, Ms Skae said: “Walthamstow Academy is a fantastic place to work and to learn. I am proud and delighted that ULT have given me the opportunity to lead Walthamstow Academy into its next exciting stage. I am also very pleased to be part of the wider ULT network and to join colleagues from across the country in driving transformational change.”
Walthamstow Academy opened in 2006 and transferred into its new building a year later. In February 2009 Ofsted judged the academy to be “Good” – the second highest grade that can be awarded. This summer 34% of students achieved five or more A*-C grades including English and maths; the year before the academy opened, only 15% of students achieved these grades.
