Lambeth Academy hosts student-led performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' in Somali
6 July 2010
Lambeth Academy hosted a performance of Romeo and Juliet in Somali today. Lambeth Academy, which is sponsored by the United Learning Trust (ULT), invited students from Silverdale School in Sheffield, who had translated parts of the play into Somali, to perform in the academy’s state-of-the-art theatre. Somali students from other schools in the Lambeth area were also invited to watch the production alongside the academy’s students and staff and crew from Somali National Television.
Ennelyn Schmidt-Roberts, Assistant Principal of Lambeth Academy, suggested that the academy host the performance after learning about Silverdale School’s ambitious translation project and their dream of bringing it to life.
Ennelyn Schmidt-Roberts said: “This is such an exciting event and really helps raise awareness, pride and confidence within the Somali community. The project is about raising young people's pride in their language skills and their cultural heritage. The students’ joy in speaking Somali was evident, and it was shared by all the students in the audience.”
