Lambeth Academy Wins First Prize in Olympic Food Competition
15 July 2011
With the London Olympic Games only a year away, a group of Lambeth Academy students have been putting their culinary skills to the test to create nutritious and attractive dishes to serve the athletes in the Olympic Village.
Competing in the ‘Get Set 2012’ food competition, the students were tasked with deciding what food to give the Olympic athletes. The students researched what food athletes need to eat and then chose a selection of dishes which best represented their student community. The students practised cooking them and sent their application off.
Out of over 6,000 UK schools, Lambeth Academy reached the National Final on 12th July in London. At the Final, they had to cook their dishes in 90 minutes in front of a panel of judges which included professional chef, Angela Hartnett.
Academy student, Ferlondo Fullwood, said:
“It was terrifying to find out that we were using completely new equipment.”
Academy student, Cory Mitchell, said:
“It was a different environment for all of us; the kitchen was bigger and more professional so we really enjoyed it.”
Despite facing tough competition from the other schools, Lambeth Academy was announced the winner and their dishes will be cooked in the Olympic Village in 2012.
Ennelyn Schmidt-Roberts, Assistant Principal and International Coordinator at Lambeth Academy, said:
“This project is part of our ongoing global dimension and a perfect way for getting young people involved with the Olympic values.’
Jimmy Coley, who runs “Jimmy’s Cookery Club” at the academy. said:
“Running the cookery club at Lambeth Academy has been great fun and winning this is the cherry on top of the cake. All the hard work has really paid off and I am so proud of the students. Although they were a bit scared they knew what was expected of them and rose to the challenge.”
The Mayor of Lambeth, Councillor Christiana Valcarcel immediately sent a message to the Academy congratulating the students and teachers involved for winning such a prestigious competition.
Sending their congratulations to the academy, the British Council said:
“It’s testament to the hard work and commitment from all at the academy that they have such a rich and varied range of international activities that have real impact for all the wider community.”
